BMW’s compact SUV has been a big success and now looks better than ever.
When developing the second generation of the BMW X1 prior to its launch back in 2016, BMW knew it had to make big improvements to its compact SUV to keep it competitive in one of the car market’s most talent-heavy segments. The Mercedes GLA, Range Rover Evoque and Audi’s Q3 are all excellent competitors, and that’s before even the Jaguar E-Pace and Volvo XC40 arrived. Standing out in this area of the market is hard work, but the BMW X1 is an excellent car and manages to do just that.
The majority of BMW X1 models come with ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive as standard, but the entry level ‘18d’ diesel engine is available as a front-wheel drive only option as are the petrol powered ‘18i’ and ‘20i’. On a business lease agreement, the two-wheel drive ‘18d’ will represent the best value in the range due to the fact it has the lowest CO2 output and best fuel efficiency figures, but personal lease agreement customers may look towards the ever-popular ‘20d’. With 188bhp and fuel efficiency of over 50mpg achievable, this engine has a reputation for being able to do just about anything you want it to, and when combined with the 8-speed automatic you have one of the best drivetrains on the market.
As a BMW, you can expect the X1 to be good to drive. Driving dynamics is something BMW really prides itself in, and the sportier setup of the X1’s suspension and stiff body should give it very good handling. All BMW’s have a certain feel to them too, a weight to the steering and good body and road communication to the driver – something few rivals can match.
The interior of the X1 is pretty much identical to that of the 1 and 2-series cars in the BMW family which is exactly what you’d hope for because they’re designed well and put together with high quality materials, with all controls exactly where you’d expect them to be. Standard equipment from mid-spec ‘Sport’ trim includes Bluetooth, climate and cruise control, DAB radio, and interior ambient lighting – amongst others. On the options list meanwhile you’ll be able to find luxuries such as a concierge system, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and adaptive suspension.
Great to drive, incredibly well built and available with a strong selection of engines and options, the BMW X1 is a favourite of Synergy customers and is definitely worth shortlisting if you’re looking for a luxury compact SUV.
