Nissan revives the Pulsar name to offer an excellent no-nonsense practical family car
The Nissan Pulsar name goes pretty far back into Nissan history, having first appeared back in the late 1970’s. Under various names, the Pulsar has occasionally appeared on our roads since, but the car finally returned after a long hiatus back in early 2015.
In a tough segment where the Pulsar must compete with the likes of the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus, Nissan has gone for a practical approach emphasising space, efficiency and great value for money. This is most visible in the rear-seating of the Pulsar with its generous knee and head room unusual for this class. There’s also a large boot – 385-litres with the rear seats up expanding to 1,395-litres with them folded down.
Nissan’s no-nonsense approach continues with the engine line-up. There’s no doubt that the primary objective here is efficiency and comfort – there’s no hot-hatch version of the Pulsar, for example – so the engine choice is between a 1.2-litre or 1.6-litre ‘DIG-T’ petrol engine, or a 1.5-litre ‘DCi’ turbo diesel. Though the 1.6-litre petrol has close to 190bhp, it behaves more like a powerful cruiser than a hot-hatch thanks to its compliant suspension and quiet ride. The 1.5-litre turbo diesel continues to be a popular choice – this is the engine found in the Nissan Qashqai that is meant to be capable of over78mpg and gives out just 94g/km. With this diesel power, the Pulsar makes for a great company car – comfortable over long distances and remarkably efficient. There is an option of Nissan’s ‘XTRONIC’ automatic gearbox, but it is only available with the 1.2-litre petrol.
From ‘Tekna’ trim and above, standard equipment is very generous and makes for particularly good value. In the centre of the dash 5" colour screen, an around view monitor, blind spot monitoring, Bluetooth, cruise control with a speed limiter, a lane departure warning system, moving object detection and satellite navigation.
If you’re looking for a practical hatchback that has a great ride and one of the finest diesel engines on the market, the Nissan Pulsar is very easy to recommend. It’s a superb price, very easy to live with and in ‘Tekna’ trim, has all the equipment and gadgets needed. A very impressive car overall, a quietly assured and confident alternative to the likes of the Ford Focus and Honda Civic.
